We have had very few original Italian M1870 Vetterli firearms which were not upgraded later to have magazines. All previous examples were Carbines, but this example is in fact a short rifle! These were never issued in large numbers, and as they were not really "Front line" weapons, apparently this example escaped conversion. The M1870 Vetterli Long Rifle was the Italian service rifle
