This is a large Cow Horn Powder Flask, measuring 14 inches in overall length. While possibly intended for a musket or other small arms, this size would sometimes be used for cannon priming. The end of the horn is fitted with a later added knob which unscrews, marked with E. C. Atkins & Co. of Indianapolis, Indiana, with an 1887 patent date. This was obviously added later, likely by a family member to whom it was passed
