Late 19th or 20th century I would guess

think it is plenty lovely to hang just as it is--as a great form and symbol of creative possibility--with the repairs falling away when viewed from any distance

with a fantastic degree of detail to the portrait and plate on the corner shelf

3 1/2" x 2 5/8" x 1/4"

as if "automotive" wouldn't quite imply the rest

I purchased this one at Brimfield from a dealer from whom I covet most everything (also the source of the extra long antique whimsy chain this week.) It's the clean lines and elegantly tapering legs on this one that really do it for me, plus the old gray
