with what looks to have been a snake inside that would pop its head up when one slid the lid open

bevelled glass mirrors like this one

with a softening to the edges of the paint from many years of play which is all to the good in my opinion

It is the work of M. C. "5 Cent" Jones (1918 2003), and this I believe a portrait of his wife.
