It grows on gypsum hills at Laguna Encantata, about 3 km north of Santiago Juxtlahuaca in Oaxaca, Mexico. Discovered by Alfred Lau in 1977 and given species status in 2000, it is closely related to Pinguicula heterophylla and can propagate from small plantlets formed at leaf ends on gypsum soil.
