On 2 August 1914, the Ortega arrived at the Uruguayan port of Montevideo, with her standard cargo in addition to bullion valued at £117,000. Captain Douglas R. Kinneir, Ortega's commander, was informed that Great Britain would likely be drawn into the conflict that was erupting in Europe (World War I). After leaving port, the captain and
