This is a portrait of Nicol Contarini, the 97th Doge of Venice, reigning from 1630 to 1631. Contarini presided over the Serene Republic of Venice during the Italian plague of 16291631, which killed one third of Venice's population. The Doge of Venice, which is often mistranslated as "Duke," was the chief magistrate and leader of the Most Serene Republic of Venice.
