Oiran were the high class courtesans in vogue before geisha became popular. They were raised away from common folk and developed skills in a variety of pleasing entertainments and rituals, such as music, the tea ceremony, ikebana (flower arranging), and others. Because of their incredible formality, the demand for oiran eventually declined as geisha rose
